Chris Hani road, Soweto was plunged into chaos on Monday morning as hundreds of Diepkloof residents took to the streets to protest for proper housing.
According to Eyewitness News, around 300 people stoned cars and burned tyres in the street, causing massive delays in traffic on the N1 and N12.
“Traffic is being diverted away from the area, motorists are advised to use alternative roads such as Elias Motsoaledi and the Golden Highway,” said spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
No arrests have been made and the Public Order Unit has been deployed to quell the violence.
“Protesters then went onto the N12 of the N1 Diepkloof Interchange split. We want to call on motorists to be vigilant, and if the police ask you to turn around, to divert you, please listen. Those people were very violent,” police’s Edna Mamonyane was quoted as saying.
