A Mexican woman suffered a fractured spine when she fell from a 20-foot cliff while trying to cross the border into California.
Border patrol agents were flagged down last Thursday night by a man waving his hands while walking near Highway 98 east of Ocotillo, according to a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The man, who appeared to be uninjured, told the agents who responded that his girlfriend had fallen off a 20-foot cliff and that she was badly hurt.
After re-tracing the man’s steps, officials were able to locate the 22-year-old woman, who was in pain and complained of a back injury, the release states.
EMS was called in and it was quickly determined the woman required a helicopter to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
An MRI later revealed the woman suffered a fractured spine and would need additional treatment.
Both the male and female were determined to be Mexican nationals, officials say.
The 44-year old male was taken to the border patrol station for further processing while the female will be removed from the country after she is discharged from the hospital.
