South African Airways (SAA) report that injured passengers and crew who were on board flight SA286 – an Airbus A340-300 – which experienced severe turbulence while en route to Hong Kong, have received medical attention.
SA286 landed safely in Hong Kong today Wednesday 16 July at approximately 06h30 SA time (12h30 Hong Kong time).
SAA confirm that of the 165 (plus one infant) passengers on board the aircraft, 20 were injured (17 passengers and 3 crew members). Of the 20 injured, two were seriously injured with the remaining 18 experiencing minor injuries. The seriously injured were taken to the Prince Margaret Hospital and the North Lantau Hospital in Hong Kong. Some passengers who have received medical attention, have been discharged.
Crew members who were not injured have been transported back to their hotel. SAA staff accompanied passengers to the hospitals. SAA’s town office, with SAA’s handling agent in Hong Kong is also assisting passengers.
The interior panels of the aircraft were damaged and the aircraft is being repaired, says SAA.
