A 26-year-old sex worker had baked the plot to kill a businessman-cum-bookie in New Delhi last Wednesday. And she was aided in this by her husband, another sex worker and her boyfriend.
TOI had reported on Saturday that police had cracked the murder case and detained four suspects. On Saturday, police revealed the identities of the four. The mastermind was identified as Pooja. She was one of the many women 52-year-old Tarun Bajaj had liaisons with; but Pooja had known Bajaj for two years and had noticed his material prosperity. She wanted some of his wealth by any means.
About four months ago, Pooja started to think about bumping Bajaj off, but knew that she couldn’t do it alone. So she roped in her husband, Sooraj alias Sahil (24), a small-time punter; another sex worker, Moni, who serviced Bajaj and whom she had known for about a year; and Moni’s boyfriend, Mohit Sharma (19) alias Sunny, also a punter. They took about four months to plot the murder. They were clear about one thing: that they couldn’t leave any trace behind. So they decided not to use their phones at all.
Sahil and Sunny recced Bajaj’s house (F-433) in New Rajendra Nagar on June 21 and 23. On June 25, they got an opportunity when Bajaj called both Pooja and Moni home.
Around 11.30am that day, the four met at Pooja’s house in Karampura. The two women took an autorickshaw to Bajaj’s house, while the two men followed on motorcycle. On the way, they stopped at Madipur and called up Bajaj from a public phone.
Near B L Kapoor Hospital, Pooja borrowed a man’s phone and called up Bajaj to ask him one last time if he was alone at home and it was safe for them to come over. Following Bajaj’s ‘OK’, Pooja and Moni went inside Bajaj’s house while Sahil and Sunny stayed outside.
Bajaj took them inside to his bedroom, but a few minutes later, Pooja came out on the pretext of making a call. Moni became cosy with Bajaj to keep him busy while Pooja gave a missed call on Sahil’s number-that was the signal for the two to come in. They did and Pooja let them in. Together, the trio barged into Bajaj’s bedroom, kicked him off the bed, took out foot-long knives and started stabbing him without mercy. The intensity of the violence was such that they inflicted over 30 wounds on Bajaj and even hurt themselves in the process. Police later found many wounds that had been inflicted even after he had died.
After killing Bajaj, the four ransacked the house and collected Rs 3 lakh cash and jewellery. The two women left first with the booty; the men had to spend some more time in the house as Sahil was bleeding profusely and his wounds had to be bandaged. The two also changed into Bajaj’s T-shirts before leaving.
“They went to their house in Karampura and distributed the booty. Moni and Sunny got about Rs 30,000 each. Sahil, Pooja and Sunny left for Dehradun, while Moni went to her house in Sultanpuri,” said Alok Kumar, addl CP, central.
After their initial suspicions were proved wrong, police finally rounded up a sex worker in touch with Bajaj. She told them about Pooja and how she had asked her to join the plot. All of them were traced and arrested by “a team led by addl CP Alok Kumar and ACP S K Giri,” said Sandeep Goel, joint commissioner of police, central range.
“We have recovered Rs 1.5 lakh, the jewellery and a knife from the accused. We are trying to recover rest of the rest weapons and cash,” Alok Kumar said. #timesofindia
